Smart UIs can significantly improve
user productivity by making existing applications work better. Thin client
UIs can improve
aesthetics but typically do not deliver significant productivity gains.
Most legacy applications rely heavily on 5250 concepts like subfiles to
display
a list of records.
This example shows an iSeries
green screen using "subfile folding" to show multiple 80 column
rows for each record - the folded rows are difficult to read and cumbersome
to use.
The subfile has been "flattened” using the datagrid
control which supports horizontal scrolling, allowing the user to view
all the data for each record on a single row.
The ability to hide and sort rows, and change the column
size, allows the datagrid to be configured to suit the business user’s
role. This is another example of non-invasive modernization.
